Protecting Yourself with Karate Blocks
Stopping Punches to the Head (Age Uke) 🙌
- Stand with your feet slightly wider than your shoulders. 👣
- Keep your arms ready at your sides or up high so you can block fast. 💪
- When a punch comes at your head, swing your arm up to knock it away. 👊
- Then quickly punch or slap their face or chest so they can't hit you again. 👋
Tip: Always be ready because sometimes punches can come out of nowhere! Keep your guard up. ⚠️
Stopping Punches to the Body (Soto Uke / Uchi Uke) 🫀
- Bend your knees a little and stay balanced. 🦵
- For punches from the side, swing your arm out straight to block them. ✋
- For punches to your stomach, twist your arm in to get in the way. 🤚
- Right after, punch or kick their body so they leave you alone. 👊
Tip: Use your feet too! You can step aside or forward while blocking to dodge them even better. 🦶
Stopping Low Punches (Gedan Barai) 🦵
- Take one foot in front, with your weight on the back leg.
- When a punch aims low, swing your arm down fast in a big arc to hit it away. 👊
- Then quickly kick their legs or punch their stomach. 🦵
Tip: Keep your elbow bent for stronger, more effective low blocks that'll really stop those low punches! 🤜
General Tips:
- Practice blocking a lot so you get quicker at it. That way when it's real you'll be ready. ⏳
- Stay relaxed as you block so it's smooth and fast. 🧘♂️
- If you can, don't fight and try to calm things down with words instead of your fists. 🗣️
Remember - block the punches first before trying to hit back! That'll keep you safest. ✅
